Chapter 9

Jacob woke the next morning, floating on a cloud. He felt like a teenager who’d awakened with his first crush in his arms. Technically, he was a grown man with his first crush in his arms but that was neither here nor there. For the first moment that he lay there watching Andy sleep, it felt like a weight lifted off of his shoulders. He reveled in it.

Andy looked like the Andy of Jacob’s far away memories while he slept. He looked so young and peaceful, untouched by their damaged lives in that moment. Jacob wanted to hold it forever, so he locked that image deep inside his heart so that even if it got ripped away from him, he would never forget. He would remember waking with Andy Riley in his arms until they scattered his ashes in the wind.

Then reality set in. He remembered Andy’s words and the quiet I loved yous. He remembered the way it felt to be tucked safely inside Andy’s body. The troubles of his world seemed so far away and unable to touch him when they’d made love, and again when they woke in the night and moved into one another’s arms to make love a second time, all heart and warmth and hope.

Jacob wasn’t sure what kind of future there was for them. Their lives thus far had been riddled with so much brokenness and irrevocable hurt. It seemed like they were doomed more than they were destined to be together. He sighed at that thought and gently eased his body from Andy’s grip.

Andy barely stirred in his sleep, merely rolling to the other side of the bed with a grunt. It was really fucking cute. Jacob smiled at the picture Andy made first thing in the morning. He hadn’t been able to enjoy this last time. He’d been so freaked that he didn’t see how soft Andy’s face looked when it was sleep-swollen, or how endearing it was to see Andy’s usually stylish hair all spiked from sleep.

After looking at the clock on the bedside table he realized that Andy could sleep another twenty minutes before the alarm would rouse him, Jacob made his way to the kitchen. He put on a pot of coffee, made toast and scrambled some eggs. Jacob wasn’t sure what to do with this situation. Just minutes before he had fallen into bed with Andy, he had sworn for his son’s sake that he would control himself. A deep shame in himself was beginning to take hold, but he was trying to fight it because he remembered how wonderful it’d felt to share his burden for just one night.

And he’d meant every word he had said. He did love Andy. With all of his heart, always had and always would. And he knew Andy love him the same. But what kind of future was there in it when they’d have to go their separate ways if little Brandon came back into the picture? Brandon had to be Jake’s priority.
